Aerial survey of Denham’s Bustard in the Kouga Municipal Area

Objective of the flight:

The objective of the flight was to record Denham’s Bustard display areas in a study area comprising a rough triangle between Jeffreys Bay, Hankey and Tsitsikamma in the Eastern Cape. This forms part of a larger initiative which is being undertaken by the St Francis Kromme Trust, a registered public benefit organisation concerned with environmental issues in the greater St Francis Bay area, in co-operation with five wind energy developers in the region.

Dugong survey Bazaruto National Park, Mozambique

Objective of the flight:

The flights objectives include the observation and recording of Dugongs and their calves in order to understand habitat use and population viability.  In addition, the flights will also enable mapping of fishing activities and threats to Dugongs. The flights will form part of a 12 month assessment of Dugong distribution and fishing pressure that will enable the EWT to suggest further areas of Special Protection where high Dugong abundance and fishing threats overlap. The flights will also augment marine patrols, and direct patrol boats onto observed threats. The flight will also record Manta rays, dolphins, sharks, and whales and share this data with the Marine Megafauna Foundation.

Bonizwe flight for Midlands Conservancies Forum

Objective of the flight:

To give members of the Mpophomeni Enviro Club a look at how Mpophomeni fits into the landscape of the Midlands and in particular where other wetlands and rivers are situated.  The Enviro Club focusses many of their activities on wetlands which surround Mpophomeni.

Nyl River floodplain sewage spill

Objective of the flight:

The objective of the flight was to observe the extent of environmental damage caused by raw sewage being pumped out in close proximity of boreholes supplying water to Mookgophong/Naboomspruit as well as the Nyl River floodplain and wetlands and to take photos as evidence to be presented to the applicable authorities.

Red-Billed Oxpeckers from Limpopo to Mokala National Park

Objective of the flight:

The objective of the flight was to relocate Red-billed Oxpeckers from Limpopo to Mokala National Park in the Northern Cape. The Operation Oxpecker project was requested to catch Red-billed Oxpeckers at the Doortjie and Berg-en-Dalen farms near Swartwater in Limpopo as the farmer felt he had too many on his property and that the birds were keeping wounds on his cattle open.
