Aerial survey of breeding sites of vultures and other large tree-nesting birds in Zululand

Objective of the flight:

The Birds of Prey Programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust approached The Bateleurs to assist with aerial surveys of known tree-nesting breeding areas of vultures and other large tree-nesting birds in northern Zululand during August 2015. These surveys form part of the Zululand Vulture Project which is a partnership between Wildlife ACT, the Endangered Wildlife Trust Birds of Prey Programme and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Relocation of Red-billed Oxpeckers from Kruger National Park to Mokala National Park

Objective of the flight: The aim of the flight was to relocate 32 Red-billed Oxpeckers from the Kruger National Park to Mokala National Park as part of the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Operation Oxpecker project. This was the third and last relocation of birds to Mokala National Park to ensure that a sufficient number of birds to establish a founder population has been relocated.

Dugong survey Bazaruto National Park, Mozambique

Objective of the flight:

The flights objectives include the observation and recording of Dugongs and their calves in order to understand habitat use and population viability.  In addition, the flights will also enable mapping of fishing activities and threats to Dugongs. The flights will form part of a 12 month assessment of Dugong distribution and fishing pressure that will enable the EWT to suggest further areas of Special Protection where high Dugong abundance and fishing threats overlap. The flights will also augment marine patrols, and direct patrol boats onto observed threats. The flight will also record Manta rays, dolphins, sharks, and whales and share this data with the Marine Megafauna Foundation.

Red-Billed Oxpeckers from Limpopo to Mokala National Park

Objective of the flight:

The objective of the flight was to relocate Red-billed Oxpeckers from Limpopo to Mokala National Park in the Northern Cape. The Operation Oxpecker project was requested to catch Red-billed Oxpeckers at the Doortjie and Berg-en-Dalen farms near Swartwater in Limpopo as the farmer felt he had too many on his property and that the birds were keeping wounds on his cattle open.

Red-Billed Oxpeckers from Kruger National Park to KwaZulu-Natal

Objective of the flight:

The objective of the flight was to relocate Red-billed Oxpeckers from Skukuza in the Kruger National Park to a game farm in High Flats in KwaZulu-Natal. The Operation Oxpecker project was requested to catch Red-billed Oxpeckers at the Skukuza bomas, as they were irritating the wounds of some of the animals housed there.
