Bateleurs Aerial Survey Supports Ezemvelo’s Rapid Response to South Coast Oil Deposits

Last Saturday, The Bateleurs received an urgent request from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s Head of Coastal Care, Santosh Bachoo, following reports of significant oil deposits appearing on South Coast beaches.

To effectively contain a spill or slick, intervention must happen while the oil is still offshore. At the request of Ezemvelo, Dr Welly Qwabe, Marine Ecologist (Ecological Advice devision, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife), and Donavan Bailey, our Bateleurs volunteer pilot, conducted a rapid aerial survey of the coastline to locate the source and assess the trajectory of the drift.

This flight provided the critical "eyes in the sky" necessary for Ezemvelo to determine the appropriate course of action and mitigate further environmental impact on our shoreline.
