On the 10th July 2025, The Bateleurs flew an injured female cheetah from the Eastern Cape to a specialist veterinary and rehabilitation centre in Pretoria for urgent treatment and further care. This mission highlights the crucial role of volunteer pilots in wildlife conservation.
With the cheetah’s injuries requiring specialised attention, time was critical. Thanks to a coordinated effort between conservationists, The Bateleurs, veterinary experts, the animal was transported to receive the necessary treatment.
This mission highlights the importance of efficient and compassionate care for wildlife in distress, showcasing the commitment of all involved to protect and conserve Southern Africa’s incredible species. Through their expertise, dedication, and teamwork, The Bateleurs continue to make a significant impact in the fight to safeguard wildlife.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in this mission from the volunteers to the veterinary professionals ensuring the cheetah’s safe recovery, and for calling on us to assist with aerial support.
Bateleurs Pilot Report: Mark Slingsby:
On Thursday, 10 July 2025, I flew/sponsored a flight, from just outside PE to Pretoria. We are giving this young cheetah a new chance at life. She broke her left leg quite badly and cannot put any pressure on it. We flew her to a specialist veterinary facility - the rehab takes a long time but the surgery was successful. Cheetahs are endangered in the wild and protecting these amazing creatures is critical to their survival.
Vet Report: Brendan Tindall:
Because she/injury was so chronic it was difficult and made for a five hour surgery. Reduction was difficult to achieve but bone result is excellent. Nerves unfortunately all trapped in callus so that's a concern. But she has a chance and she has woken up well.
Thank you so much for the support. We've given this girl a fighting chance and I am very happy with the result. We'll have to wait and see how she responds and if there are any nerve and healing complications. But between the support of those that looked after her post injury, pilot Mark and the Bateleurs and all those involved in assisting with the surgery, we have given Themba a chance. Never imagined her name Themba or in English - Hope would be so powerful.
